Hulumaniani
Family: Kauai · Role: seer · First appears: Chapter I · Part 2
In Chapter I, Hulumaniani, the great seer of Kauai, watched a rainbow from Kalalea for 20 days before recognizing it as the sign of a great chief. At Wailua, Poloula gave him a canoe and men to travel to Oahu. In Chapter VI, Hulumaniani foresaw Aiwohikupua’s arrival by canoe; when the prediction came true at Laupahoehoe, they embraced and wept.
In Chapter XXV, Hulumaniani invited Laieikawai and her companions aboard his canoe, saying, “my wish is to take you all as my daughters.” In Chapter XXVI, a vision confirmed that she was the woman he had sought, and he presented her with a pig and cock before sailing that night to the place his god commanded. After enemies had him imprisoned until death, he escaped at daybreak, left a tapa-wrapped banana plant as a decoy, and rejoined his daughters. After the temple and altar collapsed, Hulumaniani and his daughters returned to dwell at Honopuwaiakua.
