Caius Trebonius

Also known as: C. Trebonius / Trebonius · Family: Roman · Role: lieutenant · First appears: The Gallic War, Book V, 15–22

In Book V of the Gallic War, Caesar appointed Caius Trebonius one of the lieutenants overseeing three legions in winter quarters in Belgium. In Book VI, he sent Trebonius with three legions to lay waste the district adjoining the Aduatuci; in Book VII at Vellaunodunum, he left him to complete the town’s capitulation arrangements. At Alesia, Trebonius and Marcus Antonius sent reinforcements to defend the fortifications during a night assault.

In Book VIII, Caesar stationed Trebonius and two legions at Genabum, later ordered him to join with three legions, and placed him among the lieutenants commanding four legions in the country of the Belgae. In the Civil War, Book I, Caesar left him at Massilia to invest the city. Trebonius began siege works there, but after Caesar ordered that the town not be taken by storm, the lieutenants drew the soldiers away from the works and stopped the assault. In Book III, Marcus Caelius Rufus fixed his tribunal near Trebonius’s bench as city praetor.
