Shemaiah the Nehelamite
Family: Judah · Role: prophet · First appears: Jeremiah 29
In Jeremiah 29, Shemaiah the Nehelamite sent letters in his own name to Zephaniah, beginning, “Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest.” He commanded Zephaniah to imprison and confine anyone who was mad or claimed to be a prophet.
God judged Shemaiah and his descendants, declaring, “Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed.” Shemaiah’s descendants would have no man dwelling among the people, and Shemaiah would not see the good God would do for them.
