Also known as: Bernard / Sir Bernard of Astolat · Family: Astolat · Role: baron · First appears: Book XVIII, Chapter IX
In Book XVIII, Chapter IX, at Astolat, Sir Bernard, the old baron, welcomes Sir Launcelot and offers him Sir Tirre’s unrecognized shield for the jousts: “and his shield ye shall have; for that is not known I dare say but here, and in no place else.” Sir Tirre, his eldest son, has been hurt and cannot ride, while his younger son Sir Lavaine is offered as Sir Launcelot’s companion. Sir Bernard’s daughter is the Fair Maiden of Astolat, also named Elaine le Blank.
Within two days, Sir Gawaine lodges with Sir Bernard at Astolat, where Sir Launcelot is also staying, and Sir Bernard and Elaine come to welcome him and ask about the Winchester tournament. Upon a morn, Sir Bernard and Sir Tirre lodge and warmly receive Sir Launcelot, Sir Bors, and Elaine le Blank at Astolat.
