The Boy's Froissart

Cardinal de Perigord

Also known as: Cardinal of Perigord · Family: France · Role: cardinal · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 77

In Book 1, Chapter 77, Cardinal de Perigord left Poitiers early to seek terms with the Prince of Wales, with King John’s permission. When the French demand that the prince and one hundred knights surrender was refused, the cardinal abandoned his efforts to make peace and told the prince, “there must be a battle: I cannot by any means pacify the King of France.”

In Chapter 78, after Lord Robert de Duras was killed, the Prince of Wales had his body carried to Poitiers and presented to the cardinal. Soon after the prince arrived at Bordeaux in Chapter 83, he believed the cardinal had sent men against him; through the intercession of Lord of Chaumont, Lord of Montferrant and Captal of Buch, the cardinal gave an explanation that satisfied the prince and his council, and regained his former place in the prince’s affection. The cardinal’s people were released at moderate ransoms, and the castellan paid ten thousand francs.

In Chapter 84, Cardinal de Perigord and Cardinal St. Vital came to England by command of Pope Innocent VI. and secured a truce between King John and King Edward and their allies, lasting until St. John the Baptist’s Day, 1359.
