Hubert de Burgh
Family: England · Role: chamberlain and warden · First appears: King John 6
Hubert de Burgh served King John as chamberlain and warden, entrusted with knights to keep the marshes between England and Wales. At Falais in 1202, while guarding Arthur of Brittany, he resisted the order to blind him and “Hubert de Burgh did preserue him from that iniurie”. Around 1205, Philip II of France stormed Chinon and captured Hubert along with many other Englishmen.
Around 1216, King John left Hubert in charge of Dover Castle, furnishing it with men, munitions, and provisions, calling him “a man of notable prowesse & valiancie”. Hubert and Gerard de Sotigam defended the castle against Louis VIII, while his brother Thomas de Burgh was associated with him as captain of Dover; Hubert was also named among King John’s sworn sureties in a league between them.
