The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Earl Edwin

Also known as: Edwin / Edwin the earl · Family: English · Role: earl · First appears: A.D. 1060–1065

In 1065, Edwin met his brother Morkar at Northampton with the men of his earldom. In 1066, the brothers drove Tosty from Lindsey after he plundered the region and slew many men. They later fought Harald, King of Norway and Tosty; the Northmen won the field, and at York they defeated Edwin and Morkar.

At London, Edwin and Morkar promised to fight alongside Archbishop Aldred and the leaders of London, who wanted Edgar Etheling as king. At Berkhampstead, Edwin and Morkar submitted to William of Normandy, exchanging hostages and oaths with him. In Lent, William took Edwin, Morkar, Edgar and other Englishmen with him to Normandy. Edwin also came with a land-force and drove Harold son of Godwin out.

In 1071, Edwin was treacherously slain by his own men.
