Baisemeaux

Also known as: De Baisemeaux / M. Baisemeaux / M. de Baisemeaux / Monsieur de Baisemeaux · Family: French court · Role: governor of the Bastile · First appears: Chapter 2

In chapter 2, as governor of the Bastile, Baisemeaux received D’Artagnan with unusual politeness and warned Porthos about Aramis’s visit and inquiries: “Will you be good enough to tell Monsieur d’Herblay that he has been to the Bastile, and has been making inquiries.” At the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, D’Artagnan stole and read Baisemeaux’s letter, discovering that Porthos was involved.

By chapter 63, Baisemeaux welcomed Athos and hosted D’Artagnan, Athos, and Aramis at the Bastile, where Aramis was already seated beside him in the governor’s dining-room. After D’Artagnan departed, Baisemeaux and the other two sat down to supper together. In chapter 65, he held Athos under the king’s order, but the order was revoked immediately and Athos was restored to liberty; by chapter 66, Athos and D’Artagnan referred to him as their friend.

In chapter 67, Baisemeaux acknowledged his connection to the society and submitted to his superiors. When the report stated that prisoner No. 12 was ill, he granted the prisoner’s request for a confessor, allowing Aramis to go to him.
