Idylls of the King

Bellicent

Also known as: Queen / Queen Bellicent / Queen of Orkney · Family: Orkney · Role: queen · First appears: The Coming of Arthur 2

At Cameliard, Bellicent revealed that she was the daughter of Gorlois and Ygerne: “Daughter of Gorlois and Ygerne am I;” She was the wife of Lot, Queen of Orkney, the sister of Arthur, and the mother of Gawain, Modred, and Gareth.

In Gareth and Lynette, she granted Gareth permission to seek knighthood only after he proved his obedience and love to her. At Arthur’s hall, Gareth agreed to serve disguised in the kitchens for a year without revealing his identity; later, he declared himself the son of Lot and Bellicent and a knight of Arthur.
