Melampus was the son of Amythaon and the father of Abas; his son Mantius was also recorded as the son of Melampus. At Argos, during Anaxagoras’s reign, he cured the wandering women and secured an equal share of the kingdom for himself and his brother Bias, “on condition that he and his brother Bias should share alike with Anaxagoras.” His descendants were traced six generations and six kings to Amphilochus.
