Pausanias' Description of Greece

Nileus

Role: son of Codrus and leader of a colony · First appears: Book 7 · Chapter 2

Nileus was a son of Codrus and the brother and rival of Medon: in Book 7, Chapter 2, they quarrelled over who should rule Athens. When the oracle at Delphi assigned the kingdom to Medon, Nileus and Codrus’s other sons were sent to found a colony.

At Miletus, Nileus and the Ionians conquered the city, killed its male inhabitants except those who escaped, and married the surviving women and daughters. Later, Æpytus, Nileus’s son, was named among those associated with the colonization of Priene.
