The Sháh Námeh

Girgín

Also known as: Gurgín · Family: Irán · Role: warrior · First appears: The Return of Kai-káús · Part 2

In the Story of Sohráb, Girgín stood among the chiefs summoned by Kai-káús to advise on defending against the invasion. Later, in the Story of Byzun and Maníjeh, he accompanied Byzun on an expedition against destructive wild boars. Envious of Byzun’s success, Girgín tried to stop him sending proof of his bravery to Kai-khosráu, then persuaded him to visit the garden where Maníjeh came each spring. She saw Byzun there and fell in love with him.

After Byzun was lost, he told Pírán the story and revealed Girgín’s treachery. Girgín falsely told Gíw that Byzun had disappeared while pursuing a phantom-elk; Gíw seized him by the beard and beat him with a scourge. Kai-khosráu put Girgín in chains and imprisoned him, but Rustem later secured his release so he could join the expedition. Girgín’s children remained in prison as hostages for his conduct.
