John Arundell

Also known as: Sir John Arundel / sir Iohn Arundell · Family: England · Role: marshal · First appears: Richard II 4

Around 1378, under Richard II, Sir John Arundel succeeded the earl of Northumberland as lord marshal, “brother vnto the earle of Arundel.” About 1379, he led an expedition to aid the duke of Britaine alongside Hugh Calverley, Thomas Percy, Earl of Worcester, William Elmham, Thomas Morews, and Thomas Banester, but a tempest scattered the fleet. His ship was wrecked on the coast of Ireland, and he drowned while trying to reach land; Robert Rust also perished attempting to rescue him.

In 1380, John Arundel was again sent with reinforcements, but he and many of his companions were drowned in a tempest. Under Henry IV, he was named among the forty-six knights of the Bath created by the new king.

By about 1450, in Gascony, John Arundel worked with Camois and George Seymour to man towns, gather troops, and encourage the Gascoignes, while sending letters to England for urgent aid. The relief did not arrive, and the French captured Iansacke, S. Foie, and other important fortresses.
