In chapter 2, Louis is identified as the grandson of Henry IV. By chapter 14, Madame Henrietta of England is named as his daughter, while Duc de Beaufort is described in chapters 16–17 as “the grandson of Henry IV. and Gabrielle d’Estrées,” sharing his ancestor’s good nature, bravery, pride, and Gascon character.
In chapter 21, Henry IV was on his way to visit Mademoiselle Paulet when he was assassinated. Chapter 36 identifies the two women praying together as the daughter and granddaughter of Henry IV, and chapter 38 names Henrietta Maria as his daughter while stating that Queen Elizabeth was not his niece. In chapter 49, Monsieur de Vendôme is identified as the son of Henry IV.
