Milady
Family: Unknown · Role: former adversary · First appears: Chapter 35
In chapter 35, Milady was an enemy of Athos, Porthos, D’Artagnan, and Aramis. Athos recalled that she had been present where Athos now sat and said he would have cut off her head had the executioner of Bethune not intervened, calling her “a most atrocious woman.” Milady was also connected with Lord de Winter as his sister, and Mordaunt later identified her as his mother.
In chapter 40, Mordaunt accused Lord de Winter of murdering Milady and taking his inheritance, asking, “My lord, what have you done with your sister—your sister, who was my mother?” Lord de Winter revealed that Milady had caused Duke of Buckingham to be stabbed, had a young woman poisoned at the convent of the Augustines at Bethune, and had attempted further murders. Mordaunt vowed to hold Lord de Winter and Milady’s other accomplices accountable for her death.
In chapters 41 and 43, Lord de Winter revealed that Mordaunt was present as “Milady’s son.” At Boulogne, Mordaunt identified himself to Athos, Aramis, and Lord de Winter as Milady’s son, Lord de Winter’s nephew, a monk, and Cromwell’s secretary and friend. In chapter 56, Mordaunt was again identified as “the son of Milady.”
