Robert, Earl of Gloucester

Also known as: Earl of Glocester / Earl of Gloucester / Robert / Robert, Earl of Glocester · Family: Glocester · Role: Earl · First appears: A.D. 1124–1126

In 1126, King Henry had his brother taken from Bishop Roger of Salisbury and placed in the keeping of his son Robert, Earl of Gloucester, who had him brought to Bristol Castle. In 1127, Robert went with his sister Athelicia.

In 1140, Robert was aware that King Stephen meant to seize him. On Candlemas, Robert and Randolph, Earl of Chester fought against Stephen and captured him; Stephen was imprisoned at Bristol. Later that year Robert was captured and imprisoned at Rochester, then exchanged for Stephen: “they should let the king out of prison for the earl, and the earl for the king”. Robert also spoke with Henry, Bishop of Winchester and the empress, and they swore oaths.
