Dathan
Family: Israelites · Role: Hebrew officer · First appears: The Youth Of Moses
In The Youth Of Moses, Dathan is identified as a Hebrew officer, the son of Pallu and brother of Abiram, and husband of Shelomith. After an Egyptian taskmaster assaulted Shelomith, he beat Dathan repeatedly, intending to kill him. The next day, Dathan and Abiram provoked a quarrel with Moses and threatened to expose his killing of the Egyptian; Dathan’s challenge was, “Young man, who hath made thee to be a judge over us, thou that hast not yet attained to years of maturity?” The brothers reported Moses to Pharaoh, who ordered his arrest and condemned him to death.
In The Return To Egypt, Moses was told that Dathan and Abiram had become poor and insignificant, without the power to harm him.
