Le Morte d'Arthur

Elias

Also known as: Elias de Gomeret / Elias the captain / Sir Elias · Family: Sessoin · Role: captain · First appears: Book X, Chapter XXVIII

Elias, also known as Elias de Gomeret, Elias the captain, and Sir Elias, is the captain of Sessoin. In Book X, Chapter XXVIII, he led a large Sessoin host into King Mark’s land near Tintagil: “their captain’s name was Elias.” King Mark agreed to surrender the castle unless Sir Tristram arrived in time, and after recovering, Sir Tristram entered Tintagil with ten knights to rescue him.

In Chapter XXIX, Elias and King Mark were rivals in battle; Elias struck King Mark so hard that he fell from his saddle. Sir Tristram then met Elias and struck him from his saddle in turn, while the two forces fought until nightfall. The next morning Elias called on King Mark to leave his walls and later proposed a champion duel, wagering Cornwall’s yearly tribute and offering to abandon his claim if King Mark’s knight prevailed. In Chapter XXXVI, Elias de Gomeret appeared with Cari de Gomeret, Guy, and Garaunt before Morgan le Fay after Alisander had defeated the four knights; Elias and Cari de Gomeret were armed, while Guy and Garaunt were unarmed, and Elias is associated with all three as a friend.
