The Rámáyan of Válmíki

Śántá

Family: Angas · Role: princess · First appears: Book I, Canto 8 · Sumantra’s Speech

In Book I, Canto 8, Sumantra tells how Lomapád was to give his daughter Śántá in marriage to Rishyaśring. In Canto 10, Śántá went with Rishyaśring and Daśaratha to Daśaratha’s city; Sumantra says Daśaratha would have a daughter, Śántá, of “happy destiny.”

In Canto 17, Śántá agreed to leave her comfortable life and return to the forest with her husband. Kauśalyá, Sumitrá, and Kaikeyí wept as they bade her farewell, while Daśaratha’s thoughts remained fixed on his friend Rishyaśring. In Canto 18, Rishyaśring embraced Śántá when they reunited.
