Styx
Role: goddess and river · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 18
In Book 8, Chapter 18, Styx is described as the daughter of Oceanus and wife of Pallas in the account attributed to Hesiod; Linus is also said to have represented her. Epimenides instead describes her as Piras’s wife and the mother of Echidna, while Homer frequently introduces the Styx in his poetry.
The same chapter records a tradition that Alexander son of Philip died from the Styx’s poisonous water, while noting uncertainty over whether this was really the cause.
