Georgiana Darcy

As a child, Georgiana was affectionate and pleasing, and extremely fond of George Wickham, who devoted hours to her amusement. She was the daughter of Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley and Lady Anne Darcy, and after her father’s death she was placed under the guardianship of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam. About a year before the events at Ramsgate, she was taken from school and established in London with the lady who supervised her education; at Ramsgate, Lady Catherine de Bourgh arranged for two men-servants to accompany her.

At fifteen, Georgiana’s intended elopement with George Wickham was discovered by Fitzwilliam Darcy, who wrote to George Wickham and had Mrs. Younge removed from her charge. “I joined them unexpectedly a day or two before the intended elopement” Later, Caroline Bingley praised Georgiana’s beauty, elegance, and accomplishments, hoping she would become Charles Bingley’s sister, while Fitzwilliam Darcy was impatient to see her. Georgiana was accompanied by Mrs. Annesley, and remained the subject of Caroline Bingley’s praise and hopes of increasing intimacy.

When Georgiana came to Pemberley, Fitzwilliam Darcy wished to introduce her to Elizabeth Bennet. On her brother’s recommendation, she accepted Elizabeth Bennet as lovely and amiable; Georgiana and Fitzwilliam Darcy invited Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Gardiner, and Mrs. Gardiner to dinner, and the visitors arranged to return her civility. Pemberley became Georgiana’s home, and she formed a strong attachment to Elizabeth Bennet; “the attachment of the sisters was exactly what Darcy had hoped to see”.
