Herodotus' Histories

Helen

Family: Greek · Role: woman carried off by Alexander · First appears: Book 1 · §1–8

Alexander carried Helen off from Sparta, then, after winds drove him off course, arrived with her and much wealth in Egypt. Thonis seized him, detained his ships, and brought him, Helen, and the wealth to Memphis. Proteus ordered Alexander and his fellow-voyagers to leave within three days, keeping Helen and the wealth for Menelaos, Helen’s husband and the man whose host Alexander had been.

After the Teucrians said Helen and the stolen wealth were in Egypt, the Hellenes besieged and took Ilion. Menelaos later reached Proteus in Egypt and received Helen unharmed, along with his wealth. In the account of the war over Sigeion, Menelaos is also named among those who had joined in exacting vengeance for Helen’s rape.
