The Wars of the Jews

Archelaus (king of Cappadocia)

Also known as: Archelaus / Arehelaus · Role: king of Cappadocia · First appears: Book I, Chapter 23

In Book I, Chapter 23, Archelaus conducted Herod as far as Zephyrium and gave him presents worth thirty talents. In Chapter 25, he came hastily into Judea, fearing for Alexander and his daughter, and persuaded Herod not to execute Alexander. He defended Pheroras, after which Herod’s anger toward him was mollified, and he helped reconcile Herod and Alexander while preserving the marriage.

When Archelaus was leaving, Herod “made him a present of seventy talents,” along with a golden throne set with precious stones, eunuchs, and Pannychis. In Chapter 26, back in Cappadocia, Eurycles deceived him by falsely claiming that he had reconciled Herod and Alexander, and obtained money from him.
