Sir Andred
Also known as: Andred · Family: King Mark's court · Role: knight · First appears: Book VIII, Chapter XV
Sir Andred is a knight of King Mark’s court and a cousin of Sir Tristram. In Book VIII, Chapter XV, one of two pursuing knights defeated and wounded him. Later, he watched Sir Tristram and Queen Isoud, reported seeing them speak to King Mark, and helped provoke the king’s accusation.
That night, Sir Andred gathered twelve knights and captured Sir Tristram naked in bed with Queen Isoud, binding him hand and foot. With King Mark and some barons, he had Sir Tristram taken to a chapel on the sea rocks for judgment, but Sir Tristram broke free, struck Sir Andred down, and killed ten knights while defending himself. In Book IX, Chapter XIX, Sir Andred spread a false report of Sir Tristram’s death to seek his lands in Liones.
At the Perilous Lake, Sir Gaheris struck Sir Andred from his horse and nearly broke his neck; Sir Andred identified the fallen knight as King Mark, his cousin, and Sir Kay later spared him at Sir Gaheris’s request. Sir Uwaine likewise defeated him and left him unconscious. In Book X, Chapter XXVIII, Sir Andred led the second part of King Mark’s forces alongside Sir Dinas and Sir Argius as the army suffered heavy losses and withdrew into Tintagil.
