Ganogwioeoñ
Family: the Seneca · Role: war chief · First appears: Myth 93 · The Unseen Helpers
In Myth 93, Ganogwioeoñ, a Seneca war chief, led a war party against the Cherokee, left his men outside a town, and entered alone. He threatened the granddaughter and ordered her to bring the chief’s daughter; in the morning, the chief's daughter went with the granddaughter to the place where Ganogwioeoñ was hiding, and he killed her. After killing a pursuing warrior, he was captured when his bow broke. The women sentenced him to torture and death, but as they made him run between two lines of people, he broke free and escaped.
In the morning, two unseen helpers healed his injured feet and directed him to tools hidden beneath an old bark shelter. He found the knife, awl, and flint his men had left there two years before, then found a dead bear, two young bears, and two fawns, using their hides and meat as he traveled. The helpers told him they had aided him because he had given them the best part of his hunting meat. He later discovered they were a white wolf and a black wolf, and that day he reached home safely.
