Pausanias' Description of Greece

Berenice

Role: wife of Ptolemy · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 6

Antipater sent Berenice into Egypt as a companion to Eurydice. There, Ptolemy fell in love with her, and “so enamoured was he of her that he had children by her”; she became his wife and the mother of Magas and Ptolemy, his son by Berenice rather than Eurydice.

In Book 1, Chapter 7, Magas is described as the son of Berenice and Philip, a Macedonian commoner. Her son Magas, whom she had chosen to govern Cyrene, persuaded its people to revolt from Ptolemy and marched with an army for Egypt.
