Pawnee Hero Stories and Folk-Tales

the friend (Comanche Chief)

Family: Pawnee · Role: Kut-a´wi-kutz's friend · First appears: Comanche Chief · Part 1

One night, Kut-a´wi-kutz asked his friend to join him alone on the warpath, and his friend agreed. Kut-a´wi-kutz told him that, on their previous journey, he had seen a girl by a fire and could not put her out of his mind; he had returned to the camp to take her. Their friendship was summed up in Kut-a´wi-kutz’s words: “You are my friend; who is so near to me as you are?”

In Part 2, the friend watched the camp from a hill. Believing Kut-a´wi-kutz had been killed, he stabbed himself against a tree and died. The next morning, Kut-a´wi-kutz searched for his friend and found him dead at the foot of the tree.
