Comte de Rochefort
Also known as: Chevalier / Chevalier de Rochefort / George / Rochefort / the Comte de Rochefort / the âme damnée of the cardinal / the chevalier / the count · Family: Cardinal's Guards · Role: agent · First appears: Chapter 2
At Brussels in chapter 2, Comte de Rochefort appeared disguised as a Capuchin and tricked Monsieur de Laigues, acting as “the âme damnée of the cardinal.” In chapter 14, Richelieu ordered him to search two houses with ten Guardsmen, and Rochefort immediately obeyed; he also reported that the duchess and duke had already departed. By chapter 17, M. Bonacieux had become his best friend and planned to tell him that the queen needed a messenger to London, while Mme. Bonacieux identified Rochefort as the man who had carried her off. He was also a cousin of De Wardes.
At Béthune in chapter 61, Rochefort arrived at the convent to speak with Milady, who received him with joy as the cardinal’s tool. He left at a gallop to report to Richelieu and arrange her transportation, and at Armentières they agreed that she would wait there for the cardinal’s intelligence. The next chapter revealed their concealed family connection: Milady told another that Rochefort “is my brother,” and later called to him, “Adieu, brother!” At the fourth encounter in 1633, Rochefort and D’Artagnan reconciled after D’Artagnan had wounded him three times, embracing without malice; Rochefort then secured Planchet the rank of sergeant in the Piedmont regiment.
