Herodotus
Role: historian · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 43
In Book 1, Chapter 43, Herodotus is cited as writing similarly about the Taurians’ sacrifice of a virgin identified as Iphigenia. In Book 2, Chapter 16, the account of Io going to Egypt is attributed either to Herodotus or to the Greeks; in Chapter 30, the stories concerning Auxesia and Lamia are described as told accurately and in detail by him.
In Book 3, Chapter 25, Herodotus is said to have recorded the tradition of Arion and the dolphin as he heard it in his history about Lydia. Later references connect him with Crœsus in Book 10, Chapter 15, and note in Chapter 32 that his account of the Medes’ invasion of Greece differs from Bacis’s oracles over the name of a town.
