Pan
Also known as: Scolitas / Œnois · Family: Greek mythology · Role: god · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 28
When the Persians landed, Pan met Philippides near the Parthenian forest and said he was friendly to the Athenians and would help them at Marathon. In ancient times, Pan gave oracular responses, with Erato as his interpreter. Later, both Athenians and people of Tegea said that Pan appeared to Philippides at his temple and spoke with him.
Pan was also named in accounts of Demeter: he searched across Arcadia, saw her on Mount Elaion, and told Zeus, who sent the Fates to her. At Œnoe, a statue called him Œnois, after the Nymph who had been his nurse; elsewhere he was carved with Hercules and Apollo. Adrastus built an altar to Pan behind Hera’s temple.
