Groslow
Also known as: Captain Groslow / Monsieur Groslow / the skipper · Family: Puritans · Role: officer · First appears: Chapter 60
In chapter 60, Groslow’s blow nearly killed Parry’s brother, while Harrison trusted that when Groslow undertook something, it needed no further explanation. In chapter 61, D’Artagnan called him “one of my most intimate friends”; Groslow also played against Porthos, who won fifty pistoles and found him more agreeable than expected. That same chapter, Groslow stood guard over Charles I’s prison.
By chapter 70, Cromwell had appointed Groslow, formerly a naval officer, to command a maritime expedition. Groslow secretly took Mordaunt aboard the Lightning, then impersonated Rogers’s injured cousin and deceived Athos and D’Artagnan into accepting passage; he left the wharf with Athos, D’Artagnan, Aramis, and Porthos aboard. He employed Patrick to hide a horse, and had previously broken Parry’s head.
In chapter 71, Groslow followed Mordaunt’s orders to prepare the men and longboat for escape, while Porthos slept nearby. By chapter 72, Groslow was regarded as an enemy by Parry, D’Artagnan, Aramis, Athos, and Porthos, as he prepared to break theirs as he had broken Parry’s.
