Pausanias' Description of Greece

Sulla

Family: Romans · Role: general · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 20

At Athens, after the walls were captured and Taxilus was defeated at Chæronea, Sulla imprisoned his Athenian adversaries in the Ceramicus and ordered their decimation. When Aristion sought refuge in Athene’s temple, Sulla dragged him out and put him to death.

In Book 9, Sulla took half the Theban territory and, at Helicon, dedicated a statue of Dionysus that he had taken from the Orchomenian Minyæ. At Alalcomenæ he removed Athene’s old ivory statue, after which her temple was neglected. At Chæronea, Sulla and the Romans erected two trophies for their victories over Taxilus and the army of Mithridates.
