Antigonus (regent for Philip)
Also known as: Antigonus · Family: Macedonian · Role: Regent for Philip · First appears: Book 2 · Chapter 8
In Book 2, Chapter 8, Antigonus is identified as regent and guardian for Philip (son of Demetrius). He held Corinth with a Macedonian garrison; in the conflict there, a sudden attack and battle killed many, including the garrison’s leader Persæus, and Aratus the son of Clinias later set Corinth free. The account also says Aratus eventually became an ally of the Macedonians and Antigonus.
By Book 7, Chapter 7, Antigonus is described as Philip (son of Demetrius)’s uncle and stepfather, and as regent while Philip was still a boy. When Philip came of age, Antigonus surrendered rule over the Macedonians to him. Antigonus also made peace with Cleomenes (son of Leonidas) and the Achæans; Cleomenes later broke the agreement and enslaved Megalopolis.
In Book 8, Chapter 8, the Mantineans honored Antigonus by renaming their city Antigonea.
