Don Quixote

Hadji Morato

Also known as: Zoraida’s father / the Moor / the old man · Family: Moorish · Role: rich Moor and father · First appears: Part 1, Ch. 40.2

In Part 1, Ch. 40.3, the renegade learned that Hadji Morato was “enormously rich” and had one daughter, Zoraida, the heiress to all his wealth. In Ch. 41.1, he gave fruit from Zoraida’s garden to the captive and the renegade, not knowing the renegade’s identity.

At nightfall in Ch. 41.2, Zoraida left her father’s house and joined the Christians’ escape. In Ch. 41.3, Hadji Morato was captured, bound, gagged, and carried aboard the vessel; Zoraida asked for his release but agreed he should remain captive until Christian ground was reached. He then learned that she was a Christian and had enabled the escape, while she denied wishing to abandon or harm him. Hadji Morato flung himself into the sea, but Zoraida cried out for help and the captive’s group rescued him.
