Savary de Mauléon
Also known as: Saher de Mauleon / Sauarie de Mauleon / Sauere de Mauleon / Sauerie de Mauleon / Savary de Mauleon / Saverie de Mauleon / Savery de Mauleon · Family: England · Role: nobleman · First appears: King John 7
c. 1202, Savary de Mauléon was allied with Arthur of Brittany and opposed King John at Mirabeau, where King John defeated the assembled forces and captured him with Arthur and other leaders. King John later released him from captivity; unlike Hugh le Brun, Earl of March, Savary remained loyal to King John, giving him service that was “verie agréeable.”
By c. 1204, Savary fought alongside Robert de Turnham and Gerard de Athie in the war against William de Roches and Hugh le Brun, Earl of March, whose faction held with the French king. Around c. 1206, he was captured by Philip II of France after his forces were defeated, alongside Aimery de Lusignan.
Around c. 1215, during King John’s campaign, Savary was attacked by the Londoners, lost many of his men, and was badly wounded. In c. 1216, he forcibly removed King John’s enemies from a church and plundered the house; later, at Lin, King John appointed him captain and charged him with fortifying the town.
