the island maiden
Role: daughter of the islanders · First appears: Canto IV · The Island Maiden
In Canto IV · The Island Maiden, the island maiden met the Kalevide, and they talked together. When she learned he was the son of Kalev and Linda, she was seized with terror, slipped from the cliff and sank into the sea. The man of copper offered her weapons if she would marry him, but she refused, preferring a husband from a village on the land.
Her parents, the islander and the islander's wife, found her ornaments on the beach. Beneath the water, she told them of her encounter with the copper man and said she could not go home because the water weighed her down. In Canto V · The Kalevide and the Finnish Sorcerer, her parents planted an oak and a fir where she used to swing, in remembrance of their missing daughter. In Canto VII · The Return of the Kalevide, she sang beneath the waves, lamenting her fate and the evil lot of her brother, the Kalevide.
