Ephraim
Family: Israel · Role: son of Joseph and Asenath · First appears: Genesis 41
Before the years of famine came, Ephraim was born to Joseph and Asenath, alongside his brother Manasseh. In Egypt, Asenath again is described as bearing the two sons to Joseph.
In Genesis 48, Jacob claimed Ephraim and Manasseh as his own, equal to Reuben and Simeon, and blessed them with Joseph. Though Ephraim was the younger, Jacob declared that he would become greater than Manasseh and “he set Ephraim before Manasseh.” In Numbers 26, Ephraim is named as the parent of Shuthelah, Becher, and Tahan, through whom their families are listed.
