Duke of Brabant
Family: Brabant · Role: duke · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 19
In Book 1, Chapter 19, the Duke of Brabant lent his castle at Louvain to King Edward as a residence, though he declined to send men for the planned embassy to the emperor. The lords later promised to assemble fully equipped to besiege Cambray. In Chapter 20, when the others sealed challenges to King Philip, Duke John of Brabant held back, saying he “would do his part at the proper time and place.”
At Mont St. Quentin in Chapter 21, he advised King Edward’s army to march toward Tierache rather than straight into France, where provisions could be obtained. By Chapter 24, he came to King Edward at Tournay with more than twenty thousand men, and the English king’s allies surrounded the city. In Chapter 64, he sought a marriage between his daughter and Earl Lewis of Flanders, promising to secure Lewis’s enjoyment of Flanders; King Philip consented to the match.
