Gods and Fighting Men

Tadg (son of Cian)

First appears: The Gods · The Ever-living Living Ones · Tadg in Manannan's Islands · Part 1

Tadg was the son of Cian (son of Olioll) and grandson of Olioll; his brothers were Airnelach and Eoghan (brother of Tadg). While making his heir’s round in Munster, he lost Liban, his wife, his brothers, and many others when Cathmann’s men carried them off to Fresen. Tadg escaped by courage and sword, then ordered a curragh built and set out with his people to search for their kin: “Let us set out now on the high sea, looking for our own people that are away from us this long time.”

On the voyage, Tadg killed a nine-horned ram with his spear. In Manannan’s Islands, Connla of the Red Hair told him he was son to Conn of the Hundred Battles, and Cliodna gave Tadg birds to guide him and a cup that turned water to wine, warning him not to let it leave his hand. She blessed him and his people as they parted; they learned they had spent a year on the island, though they thought it had been only a day.

Following the birds to Fresen, Tadg defeated the foreigners and killed Cathmann after a hard fight. Liban came gladly to meet her husband, and Tadg, Liban, his brothers, and their companions returned safely to Ireland.
