Aeolus

First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.7

🌐 Also appears in: The Odyssey (as Aeolus) · The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Æolus)

Aeolus was the son of Hellen and the nymph Orseis. He married Enarete, daughter of Deimachus, and had seven sons—Cretheus, Sisyphus, Athamas, Salmoneus, Deion, Magnes, and Perieres—as well as five daughters, Canace, Alcyone, Pisidice, Calyce, and Perimede. When Hellen divided the country among his sons, Aeolus received his share and established the name of his people.

Zeus appointed Aeolus keeper of the winds. At the island of Aeolia, Odysseus’s comrades released the winds and were driven back; when Odysseus returned and begged for a fair wind, Aeolus refused further aid, saying that “he could not save him when the gods opposed.”
