The Wars of the Jews

Agrippa (son of Aristobulus and Bernice)

Also known as: Agrippa · Family: Herodian · Role: son of Aristobulus · First appears: Book I, Chapter 28

In Book I, Chapter 28, Agrippa is identified as the son of Aristobulus and Bernice, alongside his siblings Herod, Aristobulus, Herodias, and Mariamne. He later had children named Caius, Julias, Bernice, Mariamne, Drusilla, and Agrippa, the last described as the present king.

In Book II, Chapter 9, Agrippa was imprisoned and mistreated by Tiberius for six months after a domestic reported his treasonous wish. Caius released him, made him king of Philip’s former tetrarchy, and later transferred Herod Antipas’s tetrarchy to him after Agrippa followed Herod Antipas to accuse him. In Chapter 11, Claudius summoned Agrippa for his service and immediately bestowed on him his entire paternal kingdom, along with additional territories.

Agrippa died at Cesarea before completing the defensive walls of Jerusalem. A later account says that he had begun enclosing the city’s northern expansion but stopped after laying the foundations, fearing that Claudius Caesar would suspect the wall was intended to support an uprising.
