Anaxandrides
Family: Spartan · Role: Cleomenes's father · First appears: Book 3 · §142–150
At Sparta, Anaxandrides refused the Ephors’ demand that he put away his childless first wife and marry another. He later agreed to keep her and take a second wife as well, though this was not Spartan custom. The second wife bore Cleomenes; his first wife then bore Dorieos, followed by Leonidas and Cleombrotos.
After Anaxandrides died, Cleomenes succeeded to the royal power by right of birth. In the following generations, Cleombrotos was the father of Pausanias, who gained a victory described as the most famous of those known.
