The Twelve Caesars

Claudia

Family: Roman · Role: Augustus's wife · First appears: Augustus 62

Claudia was a Roman woman who became Augustus’s wife after his reconciliation with Mark Antony following their first rupture. Augustus married her as Mark Antony’s step-daughter and the daughter of Fulvia by Publius Claudius, though she was scarcely marriageable; when a difference arose with her mother-in-law Fulvia, he divorced her “untouched, and a pure virgin.”

Later, Claudius listed Claudia among the children he had by Urgulanilla. He revealed that she was in truth the daughter of Boter, his freedman, and, although she had been born five months before his divorce, ordered her “thrown naked at her mother’s door.”
