the king of Panchāla (Chapter 8)

Family: Panchāla · Role: king · First appears: Chapter VIII

In Chapter VIII, the king of Panchāla gave lands and his daughter in marriage to Annapāna. His daughter Aushadhī was described by King Janaka as “exceedingly beautiful.” The king also took to heart what was said and acted accordingly; with his unnamed chief wife and the rest of the party, he proceeded to the deity’s abode with their heads shorn like pestles.

At the royal palace, Charaka escaped the king’s attempt to burn it by setting the palace ablaze and diving underwater. The next day, enraged, the king plucked Charaka bare and threw him from a window, where a falcon seized him. The following day, Charaka demanded a daily offering of red raw meat, sesamum and rice porridge from the king, threatening further harm.
