Pausanias' Description of Greece

Euæphnus

Family: Spartan · First appears: Book 4 · Chapter 4

During the 4th Olympiad of the people of Elis, Polychares entrusted his cattle to Euæphnus to pasture on his land in exchange for a share of their produce. Euæphnus sold the cattle to merchants sailing to Laconia, then falsely told Polychares that pirates had taken them.

When Polychares went with his son to Laconia and Euæphnus was exposed as the seller, Euæphnus slew the son. Polychares had treated him as a friend and trusted him more than all the Lacedæmonians.
