Duke Hod
Also known as: Duke Hoël / Hod / the Duke · Family: Brittany · Role: duke · First appears: Chapter 13 · Part 1
At Carhaix, Duke Hod faced the assaults of Count Riol of Nantes, whose wasting of Breton land had turned the former vassal into an enemy. Count Riol of Nantes had sought to take Duke Hod’s daughter by force after Duke Hod refused her to a vassal, and many men had died in the quarrel. During the siege, Tristan came to offer his arms to Duke Hod and his son Kaherdin, whose keep still held out.
After the battle, Duke Riol promised to enter Duke Hoël’s keep, swear homage again, and restore what he had wasted, bringing the fighting to an end. Duke Hod then offered his daughter Iseult of the White Hands to Tristan as repayment for the land: “I shall be quit with you if you will take my daughter, Iseult of the White Hands”. Tristan accepted, and Duke Hod came with his friends when Tristan wed Iseult of the White Hands according to the Church’s law.
