the Buffalo calf (Tale 29)

Family: Buffalo · Role: son · First appears: Tale 29 · The Buffalo-Wife and the Javelin Game · Part 2

Before she slept with Man-Who-Kills-Game-Easily, the Buffalo cow warned her calf not to run toward him, saying, “No, my son, you must not run to that man; he put us into the fire.” The next morning, the woman revealed herself as a Buffalo and the boy as a calf. The calf and his mother went with Man-Who-Kills-Game-Easily to meet the Buffalo bull grandfather (Tale 29), then entered the Buffalo village and drove off Buffalo.

At the Buffalo camp, the calf told his father he would race three other calves and had a friend who would help him: Yellow-Calf (Tale 29 calf). After Man-Who-Kills-Game-Easily became a Buffalo, the calf, his mother, and his father later took human form to enter the village, collected presents, and became Buffalo again as they left. The calf started the Buffalo ceremony among the people.
