Pausanias' Description of Greece

Euryleon

Family: Lacedæmonian · Role: commander · First appears: Book 4 · Chapter 7

In Book 4, Chapter 7, Euryleon is described as a Lacedæmonian “for the nonce but originally a Theban descended from Cadmus” and as the fifth descendant from Ægeus, son of Œolycus. He commanded the Lacedæmonians in the centre, opposite the Messenians under Cleonnis.

In Chapter 8, their fighting remained “pretty equal” until night ended the contest. On the following day, neither side renewed the battle; after heralds arranged for the dead to be buried, both sides began the burials immediately.
