Pausanias' Description of Greece

Memnon

Family: Greek · Role: hero · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 42

Memnon was associated with differing accounts of a statue: the Thebans identified it as Phamenophes, while others said it was Sesostris; Cambyses cut it in two. His sword was kept in the temple of Æsculapius at Nicomedia.

Before marching to Ilium, Memnon came from Susa in Persia and the river Choaspes, having vanquished the surrounding tribes. At Ilium, he fought Achilles in single combat, and one of his hands is shown on Sarpedon’s shoulder.
