Elphin
Role: youth · First appears: THE DREAM OF RHONABWY 2
In The Dream of Rhonabwy 2, Elphin is identified as the son of Gwyddno Garanhir. In Taliesin 1, Taliesin is his protector: “While I continue thy protector Thou hast not much to fear;” By Taliesin 2, Elphin, son of Gwyddno Garanhir, goes to a Christmas invitation from his uncle, Maelgwn Gwynedd, but is imprisoned after boasting about his wife and bard. Rhun then brings Maelgwn Gwynedd a finger and Elphin’s ring as false proof; Elphin is released, challenges the evidence, and is imprisoned again.
In Taliesin 3, Taliesin names himself Elphin’s primary chief bard. In Taliesin 4, Taliesin frees Elphin by causing his chains to open, then has him wager that his horse is better and swifter than Maelgwn Gwynedd’s. At Pwllbair, Elphin wins the race, and Taliesin’s reward is found in a cauldron of gold.
